Rochester Mandolin Orchestra (RMO) Zoom Meeting

Hello fellow pluckers,

It’s time to reunite in sharing our mutual mando madness - virtually, at least. It’s been six months (or longer) since our last face-to-face session and I am looking for ways to ramp-up our group activities. Bernunzio’s remains closed to group gatherings for the foreseeable future and I, probably like many of you, have tried different online musical events since COVID-19 came into our lives. Some online formats work better than others but are often limited by technology. The main culprit is latency of our Internet connections that thwarts playing simultaneously from multiple sites. However, we can share music instruction and performance online and many have done so successfully.

Our first attempt will be modest with updates from the mandolin world - ours and beyond - and introduction to two new songs.

One goal will be producing a virtual audio performance of one or both pieces. I shared two examples on our YouTube channel by a subset ensemble from our group. This helped establish a practice that can now be applied on a larger scale with all group members who want to participate. The new songs are Lafacadio, a three-part jig in 6/8 time and Principessa, a three-part waltz derived from an Italian mazurka. I posted those scores and sample performances in the shared folder.

You are invited to join the online Zoom meeting Saturday, August 1, noon - 2:00 PM. Here are the details to connect to the session.

If you have questions about setting up a Zoom account or joining a Zoom meeting, contact me and I’ll try to help. I will also post a technical paper on configuring the Zoom app to improve the sound of musical performances in the online Reference Documents folder. This will not be necessary for everyone at this session, but it would be helpful to try if you haven’t already applied the recommended settings. The document was created for the Rochester Guitar Club.

Our Zoom session is compliments of the Rochester Guitar Club. They have a Pro account to conduct virtual presentations and round robin playing sessions for their members. This is another topic for our meeting. I’d also like to hear from everyone on convening in-person once again. Other local groups are doing so with masks and social distancing practice applied. We could do the same for those comfortable.

It would help hearing back whether you plan to attend or not. The Saturday time was chosen based on our session schedule at Bernunzio’s. We may find weeknights work better for virtual meetings; I don’t know until I hear from you.

I’m looking forward to re-opening the RMO with your participation!
